The Power of Influence:

HELPING WALMART BEGIN ITS SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

"People and companies need to look at their ability to make change in the world. Interface has value for being a living model that continues to evolve its sustainability practice. Their influence is their journey, and the length of their journey, and at what depth the company integrated sustainability and change. That has influence."
- Andy Ruben,
former Vice President for Corporate Strategy and Sustainability at Walmart

Ray Anderson, Interface's founder and Chairman, served as an advisor to Walmart's then CEO, Lee Scott, as the company became more aware of its environmental impact. In addition, Anderson was a mentor to Mike Duke, current CEO, during his initial exploration of the connection between business opportunity and the environment.

Anderson, and InterfaceRAISE Managing Director Jim Hartzfeld, have repeatedly shared their passion and vision for sustainability with Walmart executives, along with their first-hand learning experiences. The interactions included attending a retreat with a small group of executives, and a presentation of the broad view of sustainability to a group of more than 600 Walmart associates and suppliers in one of the initial Sustainability Milestone Meetings in Bentonville, Arkansas.

As part of Walmart's initial learning process, InterfaceRAISE hosted two groups of Walmart executives for an immersion program at Interface's flagship manufacturing facility in LaGrange, GA. Following that, Anderson and Hartzfeld engaged with the Sustainable Value Networks (SVNs), and also counseled other executives as Walmart's initial sustainability plans took shape.

Beyond simple or superficial changes in behavior, Anderson and Hartzfeld guided Walmart executives to see strategic business opportunities through a new set of lenses based on the principles of sustainability.
